Research Wind Energy Converter - Rysumer Nacken

The use of wind power plants on the high sees is a great technical challenge. On the one hand, offshore machines have to fulfil both stern requirements regarding safety and technical availability on the other hand they also have to be economically viable. Our turbines have a high ecological compatibility obtained by use of environment-friendly corrosion protection paints, through the minimization of sound emissions from the machine and a total isolation of the technical components from the sea environment.

The BARD Engineering GmbH is therefore currently installing two offshore wind energy converter prototypes near the reclamation area “Rysumer Nacken” on the Knock, west of Emden for research purposes. A corresponding contract with the agency for Water- and Shipping was signed the beginning of March 2007. Shortly thereafter began the works for the foundations. On the 21st of November 2007 the first prototype was completely installed. The area has a total size of 750 hectares and was reclaimed at the beginning of the seventies until the end of 1995 with sediment and sand from the river Ems, to gain new industrial real estate.

The “BARD 5.0” is an own development and is comparable to the machines which are intended to be installed in the first BARD offshore wind power plants. The hub height is 90 meter. The target is to intensively test and prove the whole construction on the “Rysumer Nacken” under similar conditions as are prevalent on the open sea. This gives BARD the opportunity to adjust the engineering if necessary and to optimally adapt to the difficult conditions of the North Sea. The maintenance and the service for the research wind energy converters will be carried out by a qualified maintenance company. Furthermore there will be regular inspections by technical experts. There will also be a met mast installed on the site. This will enable measurements of among other things the power curve and the sound emissions. The produced electricity will be fed into the public grid. The useful life of offshore wind energy converters is forecast to be 20 to 25 years.
